I’m drawn to a sense of place. Sometimes, I’m inspired to try to capture what I’m feeling within a rectangular frame. Other times, I just soak it all in. The purpose of this website is to share some of the places that I’ve captured (big and small) over the past decade or so and present them in arrangements that hopefully draw you in and evoke curiosity and mood. And maybe surprise you a little, too.
A little background…
My dad gave me his dusty old pocket bellows camera when I was 11. When I was 14 and starting to get rebellious, he built me a darkroom in the basement while I was taking my first photography class — I was over the moon. I didn’t care that it didn’t have plumbing, it was perfect. I dragged that second-hand darkroom equipment with me wherever I moved after that, setting it up in bathrooms and pantries and, finally, my own basement.
At first, I was in love with depth of field. Then came candids, street photography, hand-coloring prints with oil, studio lighting, transitioning to digital (goodbye darkroom), embracing color, participating in a couple of shows, embedding prints with beeswax, applying design principles, experimenting with collage and mixed media, and, now, creating this website to share online.
A few years ago, I decided it was OK to call myself a photographer even if I don’t do it for a living and still have so much to learn. Along with writing (which I actually do for a living), photography is core to who I am.
I hope you enjoy the site — I plan to add to it often, so please visit again. If you’re a fellow creative interested in collaborating on a project, I invite you to get in touch.
